Diary of a Green House - part 2

10th May, 2009 Green money!

by Kerry Law

Imagine my delight flicking through the Guardian yesterday to find they've devoted their Money section to greening your home!

Obviously the financial gurus at Guardian Money have looked at the benefits (or not) or solar panels, compost bins and thermostatic radiator valves from an investment point of view which makes very interesting reading. Too often, green choices can be side-stepped due to financial obstacles (particularly with my budget) so to see returns on investment laid out in black and white can make a big commitment in buying solar panels seem almost too good an opportunity to pass up!

Reporter Ashley Seager details how investing £8,500 in solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (they were also lucky enough to get a 50% government grant that is no longer available, although grants of up to £2,500 for now cheaper systems are, which I'll certainly be checking out), has meant his family is almost self-sufficient in their production of electricity every year!

I'm concentrating on reducing enery consumption right now so will definitely look forward to the day I'll be able to sell the government my surplus energy under the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme!
