Green is The New Black - written by Tamsin Blanchard
This book will be perfect for you even if you only have the slightest interest in eco & sustainable fashion.
To quote the back cover “Are you the fashionista with a conscience? Do you dream of cheap clothes that don't cost the earth? Would you love to be ethical, but hate to comprise on style? If so, Green is the new Black is for you” and I would have to wholehearted agree.
I have to admit to thinking it a bit too pink & fluffy in its trying to be green when I first saw it. The book, as expected, is made from paper from sustainable sources & recycled cardboard. It has that off white cover and the physical feel of the book does give you something of an impression of trying to do good. But hey, there are nice designs & a catchy title & I should surely be talking about the words afterall!
What I really loved about this book so much was its brilliant combination of honesty, common sense and the reams of helpful tips & information. Not only is there great content, but it's written in such a way that suddenly, in no time at all, you find yourself at the end – always a good sign! It seems so simple, but it's incredible clever. Regardless of where you are on the “Green” scale, there is bound to be something useful you will pick up.
We hear from a great cross section of women who are in the eco fashion game like Catherine Hamnett, Stella McCartney, Laura Bailey & Taupe Hynde. There is a great forward written from Lily Cole, who is incredibly honest about what she thinks about ethical fashion. We learn about too many things to mention here – everything from wedding dresses, to knitting, to clothes swapping parties, to dying clothes using onions – even tips on how to impress your friends without being an eco bore.
The book is packed full of references, websites & info on brands, organisations and shops that you use. Plus there is a long reading list of books and some templates of letters should you feel like doing a spot of campaigning. All in all we think that this book deserves the big green thumbs up!
Have a read & then why not pass it on to a friend or leave it on the tube as your goodwill gesture for spreading the green word :)
