In the Spotlight with Tamasyn Gambell

FAVOURITE GREEN/ETHICAL ACTIVITY?
My boyfriend is a cycling fanatic and he bought me an old bike from the 1970s a couple of years ago. After a pretty hairy first ride in central London I am now hooked and cycle every day. Its so much easier than the tube or a cramped bus, and the perfect way to wake me up everyday!

BEST ETHICAL BUY?
A shirt dress from a Howies sample sale last autumn. It’s a really soft organic cotton and goes with everything.

WHAT GREEN/ETHICAL PRODUCTS ARE YOU WAITING TO SEE DESIGNED?
Eco friendly airplanes! I love traveling and It’s often very hard to find time effective ways of travelling long distance that don’t involve flying. It would be amazing if you could travel by air without it causing the damage to the environment that it does.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL ETHICAL/GREEN DILEMMA?
Long distance travel and the airplane issue

WHERE/WHO DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
I get inspiration from the Art Deco and Bauhaus movements. I find their designs have a timeless and pure quality that I never tire of. I am also inspired by architecture, art, music and fashion. In London there is always an exhibition, concert or show to get you excited and full of design ideas.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE IS FOR ETHICAL FASHION?
I think its very bright. People are increasingly aware of the damage that the fashion world does and are responding to it in a positive way. As the consumer becomes more educated we, as designers have to respond and take a good look at what materials, labor and production methods we use and how we can make more ethical choices.

THE LAST GREEN THING I DID WAS..
Sign up for the race for life, in aid of cancer research. I’ve been doing it for 3 years now after I lost my father to cancer. It’s a fantastic way to raise money for an underfunded cause and keeps you fit and healthy.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ONE PIECE OF ETHICAL/GREEN ADVICE TO GIVE ETHICS GIRLS?
Really think about what you buy. We live in culture where the high street is over saturated with cheap, poor quality goods and its easy to get swept away and buy, buy, buy! I always think its better to invest in a few key pieces and browse the charity shops and car boots for impulse buys! That way you’ll look unique and stylish!
